Our Role

Dartmouth has a lot to offer if you're interested in Wilderness Medicine! 1)We're the only medical school in the US in a rural setting, 2)with access to wilderness classrooms, 3)and affiliated with the largest college outdoor program!

Where to begin?

If you're interested in training in Wilderness Medicine, we can help! From entry-level course all the way up through WEMT and onto medical school, Dartmouth has something to offer you! Here are different levels of training we offer on campus, or are offered near by:

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one-and maybe even save a life.

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

The WFR is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions.

Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC)

Outdoor Emergency Care® is the National Ski Patrol's (NSP's) award-winning training program for patrollers and others in the recreation community who deal with emergency situations. This nationally recognized program is designed to help you manage the toughest emergencies, in all seasons. Developed in the late 1980s for the 28,000 members of the National Ski Patrol, Outdoor Emergency Care is a training program that is tailored to the non-urban rescuer. Over the years, OEC has evolved to address the needs of other outdoor-based emergency care providers too, including wilderness medical technicians, river rafting and mountaineering guides, members of search and rescue groups, mountain bike patrollers, and parks and recreation employees. Today, OEC is considered the standard of training for emergency care in the outdoor environment and is recognized by resorts and recreational facilities in all 50 states.

After four weeks of classroom education, practical skills, scenarios, and full-scale mock rescues, you'll be ready to handle medical emergencies, in the wilderness or in town. You'll earn both your EMT and your Wilderness EMT certifications, preparing you to work on an ambulance, for an outdoor organization, or a land management agency.
