Hell Gate Gorge Cabin

OPO Cabin in the Grant

As of November 2019, Hell Gate Gorge Cabin is closed indefinitely due to fire damage. We will update this page when more details become available concerning its status and potential repairs.

Capacity: 9

Hell Gate Gorge Cabin was built in 1974 under the direction of Al Merrill and Jack Noon ’68 to replace old logging camps located above the Fish and Game camps on the other side of the river. The sight and sound of the Dead Diamond passing through the Gorge is notable.

Hell Gate Gorge is a three-room cabin overlooking the lower end of the gorge. It sleeps nine (eight bunks with mattresses and a roll-away cot) and has a screened porch, gas lights, refrigerator, and stove for cooking, and a wood stove for heating. There is no piped-in water, but water is available from the river.

Hell Gate Gorge Cabin is 12.0 miles from the Second College Grant entrance and there is parking by the cabin. Depending on the plowing and road conditions, the cabin can also be accessed from the Abbot Brook Road Gate.
