Policies

Our goal is to provide high quality outdoor equipment to facilitate transformative outdoor experiences for the Dartmouth community. These policies have been developed to ensure access remains equitable and sustainable. Thank you for your help stewarding our shared resources!

1. Eligibility to rent - Dartmouth Outdoor Rentals is available for all members of the Dartmouth Community with a Dartmouth ID. Individuals must be present and provide their Dartmouth ID at the time of rental and return.

All rentals are FREE for Dartmouth Undergraduates.

While we work on an updating pricing structure, Graduate Students, Staff & Faculty may rent at no cost. Anticipate a new pricing structure to be announced soon.

2. Renter Equipment Quantity - Renters may check out a limit of one of any one type of rental item.

Example: 1 sleeping bag, 1 tent, and 1 backpack is ALLOWED

Example: 5 sleeping bags, 1 tent, and 2 backpacks is NOT ALLOWED

3. Rental Period - All rentals are due back one week from the rental date. Longer rentals may be possible depending on the nature of the request and availability of gear. To discuss longer rentals, please contact Andrew Deaett, Outdoor Operations Manager Andrew.m.deaett@dartmouth.edu

4. Return Hours - Returns are allowed during DOR business hours. It is the renter's responsibility to ensure that items are checked back in with a desk worker. We cannot guarantee that items returned outside of these hours will be received and renters assume liability for full replacement costs.

5. Group Rentals for Campus Partners - If you are interested in renting items for more than just your own use, please submit a Dartmouth Outdoor Programs–Program and Group Gear Inquiry Form. Please allow a minimum of two weeks lead time between the time you submit this form and the date of your program or group gear rental.

Examples of group rental programs: 15 snowshoes for a wellness program with your graduate school.

All group rentals will be charged our weekly rental fees. Payment policies apply.

6. Late and Lost Gear - All rentals are due back one week from date of rental; renters assume all liability for damaged, or lost gear.

Notice 1 - Individual is emailed within 24 hours after gear was due and advised to return gear at earliest convenience.

Notice 2 - Individual is emailed one week after gear was due, and notified that if gear is not returned by 2 weeks from the return date, they will be charged the full replacement cost of the order.

Full replacement costs will be charged to undergraduate and graduate student accounts 2 weeks after the original return date. Employees may pay any replacement costs by check.

7. Charging student accounts - All fees for graduate and undergraduate students will be charged to student accounts. Find more information on Administrative Fees & Fines practices and policies here: https://www.dartmouth.edu/finance/tuition/dartmouth_card/id_card_accounts/

STORES
Omer and Bob’s in Lebanon Mall downtown has outdoor sports oriented gear (like bikes, skis and boards, racquets, and clothing).

Gear Again in White River Junction, Vermont is a consignment shop for outdoor gear.

Five miles south of Hanover, the Powerhouse Mall in West Lebanon has an Eastern Mountain Sports and an L.L. Bean. If you can’t get a ride, there’s a free bus service in the area: Advance Transit.

In Norwich is Dan & Whit’s, a general store which also has outdoor gear oriented towards New England winters. Hirsch’s in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Farm-Way in Bradford, Vermont, also have an excellent selection of outdoor winter clothing.
