OPO Inclusivity

We believe the outdoors is for everyone. The OPO holds a value of inclusivity, which for us means:

  1. We strive to pay attention to the details that build inclusivity- language, accessibility, offer diverse programming, and seek training.
  2. We will explore ways to be inclusive in our outreach, our programs, our partnerships, and our staffing to improve social conditions of marginalized groups to the level possible within our powers.
  3. We strive to hold this work in every aspect of what we do, meeting students where they are in order to build a community that feels welcoming to all individuals.
  4. We seek feedback from our students and will adjust our programs accordingly.

OPO Highlights

Accessibility

  • If you are looking for accessible opportunities and are not finding any on Trailhead, please reach out! We have recommendations for local spots, such as Pine Park that are easy to get to and have leveled, gravel trails, and spots further afield such as Vermont Adaptive Programs and the AMC All User Trail to name just a few!
-if you need an accommodation for one of our programs, please reach out to Student Accessibility Services and we will work with them to meet your needs.

Beginner Weeks

  • The DOC hosts Beginner Weeks about once a term. This is a whole week of sub club events designed purposefully for easy entry into our activities. All gear, know how, and transportation are provided by our DOC Leaders! Keep an eye on Trailhead for events marked with a 🐝.
  • All Outside Conference
  • Check out the DOC sub clubs page to read more about the good work that the DOC is doing to focus on being more inclusive for all, especially in DIJE, POCO, and VHOC!

Still feel unsure of where you might fit in? Come talk to us! We are also always looking for ways to learn and grow in our knowledge of DIJE. If you have an idea on how we can do better, please email us at outdoor.programs@dartmouth.edu.
