Class of '66 Lodge

The Class of ’66 Lodge (formerly Harris Cabin II or Harris Centennial Cabin), located a ten minute drive from Dartmouth College, was designed and built by Dartmouth students. Located on the slopes of Moose Mountain, the Class of ’66 Lodge is an ideal location to hold seminars, weekend getaways, or just to enjoy time with friends.

Cabin Overview

The Class of ’66 Lodge is designed for large groups of up to 49 individuals and can meet both social and classroom requirements. Our first cabin with a solar array mounted on the roof, the lodge has rustic electric lighting. In the kitchen, there is a commercial 6 burner gas cook stove and oven, and ample counter space and cookware to feed large groups. There are sufficient tables and chairs to set up family style meals as well as classroom type settings. Additionally, basic cleaning supplies and toilet paper are provided as a courtesy but cannot be guaranteed.

The building features a kitchen, a main gathering room, an upstairs sleeping room, and several decks and lofts. Two wood stoves supply heat in the winter, and a large stone chimney forms the centerpiece of the room. Use of the fireplace incurs an extra fee for its wood consumption.

The building is insulated, relatively airtight, and heats to a modest temperature with the two woodstoves, even in midwinter. The water available onsite is untreated stream water, piped in during the summer months, but must be obtained directly from the brook after freeze up. A deep pool in the stream area ensures a water supply is available year round. This water is not guaranteed to be potable. Suitable treatment is required to ensure the safety of the water. The two stall outhouse is the only toilet facility. There is no refrigerator or dishwasher. Some mattresses are provided, but no sheets or blankets. Renters will be given an information sheet to explain the features of the cabin and how to use them. The information sheet also outlines the guidelines and policies for the safe use and operation of the facility. You are expected to abide by these policies and guidelines during your rental.

Availability

Cabin availability is on a first come, first serve basis. How far in advance you can book a cabin depends on both the cabin and your group type. The Class of '66 Lodge (a DOC cabin) can be reserved up to six months in advance by the DOC, and for educational groups and reunions. Students can reserve the lodge up to three months in advance, and everyone else can reserve up to two months in advance.

All of the cabins are available year-round, except that we close the Grant down around the month of April for mud season. Also, we don’t plow all the roads in the Grant every year (it depends on where logging operations are going on), so some cabins may be far from parking in the winter.

How to Reserve

All cabin reservations are made online through ResNexus, albeit on separate pages for DOC and OPO Cabins. ResNexus only allows online booking within the standard availability window (four weeks for DOC cabins, six months for OPO cabins). All reservations beyond the standard booking window can only be made by contacting the Cabins Manager. If you are unsure whether your group qualifies for advance booking, reach out to the Cabins Manager and they can assist you.

You will NOT be charged until the Cabins Managers have received an accurate guest list, including the names of all guests that will be in attendance, as well as class years if you are a student group. All online reservations must add payment information (i.e. credit or debit card) to complete the booking. If your group qualifies for a free reservation, the Cabins Manager will adjust your rate manually once they have received your guest list.

Cabin Policies

The Class of '66 Lodge may be reserved up to 6 months in advance by the DOC, educational groups, or reunions, with approval. It may be reserved up to 3 months in advance by students, and up to 2 months in advance by everyone else.

Reservations must be made in the name of one person (not an organization) — that person must accompany the group and is responsible for the actions of the group at the cabin. The Grant Caretaker is authorized to request identification. All cabin reservations are completed online, with confirmation by e-mail.

Dartmouth students may reserve a cabin more than 6 weeks in advance only by contacting the DOC Cabins Manager.

Keys and Renter Responsibilities

Cabins are secured by combination padlocks or combination key lockboxes. Lock combinations will be provided to cabin renters one week before their stay.
Access gates in the Second College Grant are secured by padlock, with combination key lockboxes nearby.
Renters wishing to use the fireplace at the Class of '66 Lodge should inquire with the DOC Cabins Manager. There is a different combination to unlock the fireplace. There is a fireplace usage fee of $35 per night to cover wood consumption. Use of the fireplace may be denied.
The use of all DOC and Outdoor Programs facilities is intended to be for educational purposes. While the consumption of alcohol is permitted, it must be limited to 1-2 servings per person and will be strictly monitored. 'Drinking games' of any kind are not permitted. Obvious intoxication by any member of the group will result in immediate revocation of use privileges for the entire group or organization. Continued use of these facilities and spaces are contingent upon adherence to this and all other policies as well as compliance with Outdoor Programs staff.
Outdoor Programs may charge for any damage to a cabin or any cleaning that is necessary resulting from a cabin stay. Additionally, outdoor fires are not allowed at any cabins except '66 Lodge, Armington, or Great Bear and require the advance permission of the Cabins Manager. Evidence of an unauthorized outdoor fire will incur a $100 fine.
Pets are allowed at all cabins. Owners are responsible for the behaviour and management of pets, and any damages or mess will result in fines. Please pick up waste and remove from the property.

Payment

Fees are charged per individual. Group size may not exceed the capacity of the cabin (nor is tenting permitted around the cabins or anywhere in the Grant).
Payment information (e.g. credit card number) is due upon making the reservation. Payments will be processed when we finalize the reservation's cabin fee.
Misrepresentation of number of party members or membership status for a cabin reservation will result in the fee being doubled. Failure to pay any fee for a cabin reservation will result in the revocation of cabin use privileges and may result in loss of Outing Club membership.

Educational Rates

Dartmouth faculty using DOC or OPO cabins with students as part of an academic class are entitled to flat per-night rates. This is listed as the "Educational Group" rate in the charts.
Educational and Non-Profit organizations (such as schools, youth groups, 501(c)3s, etc.) are eligible for discounted rates for DOC and OPO cabins. To get your organization approved for these rates, please e-mail doc.cabins@dartmouth.edu for DOC Cabins and Cabin.Reservations@dartmouth.edu for OPO Cabins. Approval may take a few weeks, so please plan ahead.

Changes and Cancellations

DOC cabin reservations may be cancelled with full refund up to seven days before the reservation. Fewer than seven days prior, cancellations forfeit half the rental fee.

We reserve the right to charge a flat cancellation fee if the rental fee has not yet been finalized. After the list of guests has been submitted, no refund will be given for individual cancellations, though replacements and additions are permitted. No refunds will be given for cancellations owing to weather conditions.

Directions and Access

’66 Lodge trailhead is located off of Three Mile Road in the village of Etna; parking is limited to 6 compact spaces in winter and 8 in the other seasons. The lodge is 0.6 mile from the parking area and is reached by a beautiful and mostly level trail which averages around a 15 minute walk from the road. There is no vehicle access.

From the Dartmouth Green, follow East Wheelock Street up and over Balch Hill and down to the village of Etna in 4.3 miles. When you come to the T-junction in Etna, turn left onto Etna Road. After 0.8 miles, turn right onto Ruddsboro Road, follow it along the brook for 1.5 miles, and turn left onto the dirt road Three Mile Road. About 1.3 miles from Ruddsboro Road, the AT crosses the road (you’ll see trail signs) but keep going. At the bottom of a hollow, you’ll see a small dirt parking area on the right, labeled “No Camping” — you can park here and follow the trail to ’66 Lodge.
